Training
Jumping Up:
Jumping up on people is one of the most common problems owners have with a new dog or even an older one.
Owners usually make the problem worse without even realizing they are doing so.
A common human response to a dog jumping up on them is to push the dog down , tell them to get down or some other action to get the dog down.
All the while the owner is encouraging this behavior without even realizing they are doing so. The reason being that in the dogs mind you are giving them the attention they are seeking be it good or bad it is still attention and that is what they are seeking. As to why dogs jump up that is another topic. But the best way to correct a problem like this is to ignore the behavior completely. Turn your back on the dog and ignore them completely they do not like being ignored. At the point when the dog stops jumping up on you and he remains on the floor reward him by giving lots of praise , a treat etc. This lets the dog know he will only receive the attention he seeks when all 4 are on the floor so to speak. This will take time but your end result will be a calmer dog when you approach. Have everyone in your household do the same even visitors. It must be consistant.
This isn't working ?
Another problem owners face without realizing it, is that sometime while training a dog the behavior seems to worsen, what comes next you give up, you say it is not working the dog is getting worse! Well here is a tip, that is normal behavior it is called an extinction burst.
The dog has learned a behavior that has worked in the past. Now you are trying to change that behavior.
So in turn all the dog knows at this point is that is what worked and he tries harder to make it work.
If you stick with it it will change.
Here lets say we walk in the dogs paws for a moment and I will tell you an example of what I mean:
You go to the Fair, You play a basketball game and on the first try you get the ball in you win the biggest prize there.
You get excited and you know you can just do this again, so you try and try but no luck ,you know you can so you try even harder but still no luck . It takes awhile before you decide it doesn't work and move on to another game.
This is the same with dogs they will try harder and harder until they try the alternative.
Once a owners understands how the dogs mind works training becomes easier to understand and apply.
